Acceptable Use Policy

Purpose
SMSHub is for lawful, expected communication: verification codes, transactional notices, reminders and customer updates. This policy applies to dashboard and API messages in any language, including Amharic and transliterated Amharic.
Supported networks
SMSHub delivers to Ethio Telecom (09xxxxxxxx) and Safaricom Ethiopia (07xxxxxxxx) numbers. A message uses 1 credit to Ethio Telecom and 2 credits to Safaricom.
Prohibited and restricted content
This list comes straight from the rules SMSHub's moderation enforces, so it always matches what actually happens. Prohibited content is stopped automatically. Restricted content is delivered and then reviewed by a person.
Prohibited: Child sexual exploitation
Any sexualised content involving minors. Enforcement: message blocked, immediate suspension, all sessions ended, API keys revoked.
Prohibited: Hate speech
Content that attacks, dehumanises, calls for violence against, or calls for the exclusion of people based on ethnicity, nation, religion, race or other protected characteristics — including ethnic slurs. Enforcement: message blocked, immediate suspension, all sessions ended, API keys revoked.
Prohibited: Threat of violence
Threats of violence against a recipient or anyone else. Enforcement: message blocked and held for review, one policy strike.
Prohibited: Scam or phishing
Messages that ask recipients to share PINs, passwords or verification codes; impersonate banks, telebirr or other providers; promise fake prizes; or request money under false pretences. Enforcement: message blocked and held for review, one policy strike.
Prohibited: Sexual content
Sexual content and unsolicited sexual material. Enforcement: message blocked, immediate suspension, all sessions ended, API keys revoked.
Prohibited: Harassment or abuse
Insults, abuse or intimidation directed at recipients. Enforcement: message blocked, immediate suspension, all sessions ended, API keys revoked.
Prohibited: Profanity
Vulgar language that is not directed at anyone. Enforcement: message blocked, immediate suspension, all sessions ended, API keys revoked.
Prohibited: Betting or gambling
Enforcement: message blocked and held for review, one policy strike.
Prohibited: Pyramid or Ponzi scheme
Enforcement: message blocked and held for review, one policy strike.
Prohibited: Crypto or investment scheme
Enforcement: message blocked and held for review, one policy strike.
Prohibited: Illegal goods (drugs, weapons, fake documents)
Enforcement: message blocked and held for review, one policy strike.
Sender signature
Messages carry the sender's signature. Misleading signatures (for example, the name of a bank or business you don't represent) are not allowed. Custom signatures are activated only after SMSHub approves them and may be reset if they are abused.
Strikes
Strikes expire after 90 days. 3 active strikes suspend sending until an administrator reviews the account.
Context and review
Automated moderation considers context — for example, an OTP message that tells users not to share a code is allowed, and news or counter-speech is routed to human review rather than automatic suspension. Automated systems can still make mistakes; every flag is available for human review and you can appeal through support.
Legal cooperation
Where required or appropriate under applicable Ethiopian law — including the Hate Speech and Disinformation Prevention and Suppression Proclamation No. 1185/2020 and the Computer Crime Proclamation No. 958/2016 — and our policies, relevant account information and message content may be reported to the Ethiopian Federal Police and/or the Information Network Security Administration (INSA), or disclosed in response to a lawful request.
